A relative got an Urdu translation done of the book History of Punjab. It’s Preface contains passages quoted from the personal journal of Syed Shams-ud- Din, the brother of Syed M. Latif. The rest of the information contained in other family documents that this relative possesses.
One of those documents is the family tree. It agnatically traces back to the tenth Imam Hazrat Imam Hadi Al Naqi Ali, Ibn Al Taqi. Some twenty-seven generations later a very prominent scholar, Maulana Haji Syed Muhammad Arab (died 1058 A.H.)who was known far and wide for his knowledge and wisdom, was invited by Emperor ShahJahan (ruled:1628-1658) to India. He was appointed to teach the royal family. This is how the tenth Imam’s family came to India, and settled in Delhi.
Between Maulana Muhammad Arab and S.M. Azeem many were given the title of “Sheikh-ul- Mashayaikh” for their literary contributions. Most of them were associated with the royal court, or had friendly ties with the court. Some of them (including Maulana Arab and, Muhammad Azeem) were given the Royal Costume or “Khillat”, by the ruling emperors in appreciation of their services.
Syed Muhammad Azeem had three sons. All three were judges:
Justice Syed Muhammad Latif (d:1902), was my father’s great grand father.
Judge Latif (above) wrote the four books I have mentioned before.
Judge Syed Muhammad Shams-ud- Din (d:1929)
Chief Justice Syed Muhammad Siraj-ud-din (d: 1949), of the Princely State of Bahawalpur.
Syed M.Latif had two sons:
Syed Muhammad Ghayas-ud-Din, and
Khanbahadur Syed Muhammad Aziz- ud-Din ( my father’s grandfather).
According to Syed Shams-ud- Din, the Jamia Mosque in Delhi ( India), has a portion called Aassaar Sharif. This Dargah holds the relics of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). Our family has the guardianship of these relics.
According to Syed Azeem, there is at least one person in every generation, who has memorised the entire Quran.
